Aizawl, Sep 27 (UNI) North Eastern Council (NEC) has proposed to introduce an integrated project for self-sufficiency in animal origin food in Northeast region.

It aims to tackle the main hurdles coming in the way of development of animal husbandry in the region, official sources informed.

The NEC had conducted a survey, which indicated that the NER imports food of animal origin, consisting mostly of poultry, piggery and meat, to the tune of Rs 1000 crores annually, .

The project would set up base farm for direct funding to all interested across the NE states. Moreover, it could be entrusted to the state government and for direct funding to unemployed youths and selected societies would be based on a model viable scheme.

Under this scheme, NEC had already provided assistance to about 16 registered societies and associations, which included two each in Arunachal Pradesh, Asom, Meghalaya and five each in Nagaland and Mizoram.

Presently, the proposal for setting up of base farms had been prepared and the Planning Commission had given its aapproval to the base farm schemes. These base farm schemes would be implemented either by the state governments or Apex Co-Operative organisations, the official sources added.
