Mizoram govt to collect tax across borders

Aizawl, Sep 27: Mizoram government will set up four taxation checkgates near the border areas to collect systematic taxes, more revenue and monitor the goods.

State taxation commissioner T B C Rozara today said so far three checkgates have been established at Vairengte near Asom-Mizoram border, Lengpui airport and Melbuk near Indo-Myanmar border.

The fourth one would be soon set up at Tlabung near Indo-Myanmar border in southern part of the state.

Asserting the importance of these checkgates, Mr Rozara said all the goods entering Mizoram could now be systematically recorded and monitored.

The checkgates would be headed by a tax superintendent to keep strict vigil on whether the goods passing through the gate were having valid documents, he said.

The commissioner further said these checkgates made under section 61 of the Mizoram VAT 2005 have contributed Rs 8.35 crore as state revenue during the 2005-2006 fiscal.

''This year our state was able to meet its 10 per cent share in several Centrally funded schemes due to the VAT revenue,''he said.
