Kerala to introduce sports lottery: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 27 (UNI) Kerala Law and Sports Minister M Vijayakumar today said that the government was planning to introduce a ''sports lottery'' to mobilse resources for the development of sports in the state.

Replying to questions by Thomas Unniyadan (KC-M), he said though the government had various projects for the development of sports, finance was the main hurdle to implement them and the lottery would help to raise funds for the purpose.

Mr Vijayan asked the members in the Assembly to utilise at least 20 per cent from their development fund for sports, in their area.

Speaking on the occasion, Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac assured that the government would utilise the whole profit, earned from the state's next super bumber lottery for sports development.

The Sports Minister said the government was planning to implement ''Operation Olympia'', a comprehensive sports development project, aimed at winning a gold medal in the next Olympics. With an eye on it, rigorous training in sports would be given to 85 lakh students in the state.

He said that the government would set up a Kerala Football Academy in Malappuram and a sports school in Wandoor.

Mr Vijayakumar said the government would order a vigilance inquiry into the corruption, irregularities and back door appointments in sports council during the previous government.
