Indian Cultural Center employees beaten UP in Dhaka

Dhaka, Sep 27 (UNI) A group of unidentified people allegedly beat up some employees at the Indian Cultural Center here today.

Witnesses to the crime said some 8 to 9 people came to the Center in Dhanmondi in two vehicles at about 1130 hrs and asked the guards to open the gate. When one Raja Mia opened the gate, they entered the Center and asked the employees to vacate the house. They also hurled abuses and beat up some employees.

It was learnt through sources that the house being used as Indian Cultural Center was sold out to a private party.

When contacted, Ajit Gupte, Counsellor of the Indian High Commission confirmed the incident and said unidentified people had entered the Cultural Center and beat up several people at the premises. Some injured needed medical treatment.

"It is a property of the High Commission of India since 1972. Any property belonging to any foreign mission is considered as a territory of that country," Gupte said.

He said that the High Commission has filed a case with Dhanmondi police station and the matter would be taken up with the Foreign Ministry here.
