Mirzapur, Sep 27 (UNI) Thousands of pilgrims are thronging the holy town to worship Goddess Jagdamba here during the ongoing 'Vindhyavasini Navratra Mela'.

Vindhyachal is one of the 108 reverred 'Shaktipeeths'.

Devotees from all over the country arrive here and offer prayers during the nine-day fair to propetiate the diety for prosperity and redemption of sins.

'Vindhyavasini Devi' finds mention in the Vedas, Puraans, epic Mahabharat and Durga Shaptasati.

After 'darshan' of the diety, people perform 'parikrama' of goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali. Every year during 'navratra', people offer prayers during 'saptami', 'ashtami' and 'navami'.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up with local police and bomb disposal squads pressed into service round-the-clock.

The pious days of 'Shardiya Navratra' started on September 23.
