Belgaum, Sep 27 (UNI) Pandemonium prevailed in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly today, with the Opposition Congress staging a dharna against a JD(S) member for displaying a photo of senior Congress leaders with an accused police official in the multi-crore stamp paper racket, leading to adjournment of the House for a brief period.

To counter the Opposition demand for a CBI inquiry into the Rs 800 crore forest land scam, unearthed by a private TV channel, Mr M P Venkatesh (JD-S) waved the photograph, in which Leader of the Opposition N Dharam Singh and KPCC President Mallikarjuna Kharge were seen in the company of accused police official T G Sangram Singh.

His action when Mr Singh sought to speak on the admissibility of the adjournment motion given notice of by his party regarding the forest land scam, triggered acrimonious scenes and nothing could be heard in the din.

Demanding an inquiry into the origin of the photograph, Mr Kharge accused the Government of indulging in character assassination to shield themselves from corruption charges and said it amounted to blackmailing.

The Congress members, seeking an apology from the MLA, trooped to the well of the House, leading to adjournment of the Assembly, by Speaker Krishna.

Even after the House re-assembled, the Congress members continued their dharna. They resumed their seats only after the Legislator tendered an apology, stating that the photograph was delivered by some unknown persons.

Home Minister M P Prakash, who also expressed regret over the incident, appealed to the Opposition Congress members to resume their seats.
