BJP condemns lathi charge on Singur farmers

Kolkata, Sep 27: The BJP in West Bengal today condemned the unprovoked police lathicharge on peaceful demonstration of farmers at Singur in Hooghly district yesterday and demanded stern action against guilty police officials.

Despite having a chill in relationship with the Trinamool Congress in the wake of a political compulsion in the state, the BJP was also critical about the alleged assault on party supremo Mamata Banerjee and said it had unmasked the 'real intention' of the ruling CPI(M).

Describing the midnight police assault as a 'barbaric attack' on the very principal of democratic movement of the country,BJP state General Secretary Rahul Sinha said such incidents also proved once again that the ruling Left Front did not have any faith in the democratic system.

Charging the CPI(M) with 'clandestinely' supporting the interest of the business class and not that of farmers,Mr Sinha felt that the government should have protected the interest of the farmers and inititate a fruitful dialogue with them before acquiring their crop land by force at Singur instead of applying force.

Incidentally, though the Trinamool Congress is yet to officially sever its electoral tie with the BJP,because of some political compulsion in the state, it was increasingly tilting towards the Congress at present.
