New Delhi, Sept 27 (UNI) The BJP today condemned 'inhuman' treatment meted out to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee by West Bengal Police during her protest against forcible acquisition of farmlands at Singur in Hoogly district.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said party president Rajnath Singh condemned the police attack on peaceful dharna and the action was nothing but 'barbarism' on a woman leader who was fighting for the cause of poor farmers.

''This has exposed the real face of the Left Government which has no respect for democratic struggle, poor farmers and dignity of women,'' he added.

Mr Singh praised Ms Baneerjee for her efforts to help and uplift the farming community. He alleged that incidents of harassing farmers were on the rise eversince the UPA came to power at the Centre.

''We strongly condemn this undemoratic and unruly behaviour of the West Bengal Government and express our solidarity with Ms Banerjee and farmers of Hoogly'', he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Singh has constituted a five-member committee headed by former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu to formulate an opinion about the acquisition of lands for Special Economic Zones.

He said farmers who lose their lands should be given alternate place and they should also be provided monetary compensation at par with the market value.

The five-member team includes former Delhi Lt Governor Vijay Kapoor, former Civil Aviation Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy, BJP Kisan Morcha chief Vinod Pandey, former MP Kirit Somayya. The committee has been asked to submit the report a fortnight.
