Tripura Govt prohibits use of current net

Agartala, Sep 26 (UNI) Tripura government has prohibited the use of ''current net'' for fishing at Dambur lake in Tripura's Dhalai district with immediate effect to save the fish seeds.

State Fishery Minister Khagendra Jamatia said the state has taken up a number of measures for the development of the lake to increase fish production.

''Use of current net in the lake has considerably brought down the number of fish. Due to less rainfall this year, the water area in the lake has also come down to 2000 hectares from 4000 hectares,'' he said.

More than 2000 fishermen families are dependent directly or indirectly on the lake for their livelihood.

Mr Jamatia further added that the production of fish in the state was 2100 kg per hectar during the current financial year while it was 1280 kg during the last financial year, he added.
