Sugarcane growers to get assistance: Yediyurappa
Belgaum, Sep 26 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today assured the Legislative Council that the government would provide necessary assistance to sugarcane growers and sugar mills, considering the financial commitments.
In response to a special mention by Congress Member V S Ugrappa on the plight of sugarcane growers in Belgaum district, he said his government would certainly help the cane growers and sugar factories on the lines of assistance provided by the neighbouring Maharashtra.
Mr Ugrappa wanted the government to announce a support price Rs.1700 per quintal on the lines of Maharashtra.
Sugar minister Govind Karjol in his reply said that the sugarcane growers and factories of the state were in problem and the government was doing everything possible to help them but expressed government's inability to announce the support price. This lead to angry exchanges between the opposition and ruling members.
Mr Yediyurappa, who intervened said that he had held discussions with the sugarcane growers and announced that the government would try to help the sugarcane growers on the lines of Maharashtra.
