Flood like situation in North Andaman

Diglipur, Sep 26 (UNI) Flood like situation due to incessant rains in Northern Andaman Islands has forced many families to evacuate their houses.

Heavy rains have caused a lot of damage to the property, however, there is no report of any loss of life.

Heavy rain since last two days has almost flooded many remote villages in North Andaman, disrupting life.

Villages like Nabagram, Ram Nagar, Kalighat, Sita Nagar, Madhupur, Desh Bandhu Gram, Milan Gram, Swaraj Gram many others are hit by heavy rain with waist deep water loggings.

'' Primary reports say more than 1000 villagers are affected by this flood like situation, ''Diglipur Panchayat Samiti head Nagen Halder said.

Mr Halder had even visited some of the affected places yesterday and wrote a letter to the Administration demanding immediate relief.

These remote archipelago islands chain has received more than 2200 mm rainfall since January, official figures stated.

About 300 villagers were shifted to different village Panchayat halls at Diglipur.

'' I have written a letter to Administration demanding relief for these rain-affected villagers and have also demand compensation for the loss of property and livestock,'' Halder told UNI in Diglipur today.

Diglipur, the northernmost part of the territory has only one river, Kalpong, which is now flowing above danger level.

'' Water-loggings due to rains and high tides are casuing main trouble, '' a Panchayat member said.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour here had blocked many roads disrupting normal life.
