56 projects worth Rs 3,565 crore sanctioned under JNNURM

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) A total of 56 projects worth Rs 3,565.40 crore have been sanctioned for 20 cities during the current fiscal till September 22 under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

These cities are Hyderabad, Vishakapatnam, Vijayawada, Chandigarh, Raipur, Nanded, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Pune, Greater Mumbai, Nagpur, Amritsar, Madurai, Asansol and Kolkata, an official statement said today.

Rs 147.42 crore have been released as first installment of centre's share of Rs 589.69 crore for 33 projects costing Rs 1317.99 crore. Release of the first installment of the Union government's share amounting to Rs 291.04 crore in respect of remaining 23 projects costing Rs 2247.41 crore was under process.

Each 'Mission City' was entitled to apply for further installments of funds subject to utilization of funds released as well as implementation of reforms by adhering to timeliness indicated in the tripartite memorandum of agreement signed between the centre, the state and the urban local body.

As and when such requests were received, fulfilling the criteria, the ministry released additional funds.

Since the launch of the mission, 79 projects at a total approved cost of Rs 4430.23 crore had been sanctioned as on September 22.

Out of these, 32 projects were related to water supply with total cost of Rs 1829.59 crore (41.30 per cent), 18 were sewerage projects costing Rs 1281.83 crore (28.93 per cent), 14 projects worth Rs 710.56 crore (16.03 per cent) were meant for storm water drainage, eight were related to road/flyovers/road over bridges projects amounting to total cost of Rs 292.25 (6.60 per cent), one costing Rs 8.67 crore (0.20 per cent) was for solid waste management, three projects worth Rs 62.15 crore (1.40 per cent) were for urban renewal and three were meant for Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) with a total cost of Rs 245.18 crore (5.53 per cent).

In the last quarter of financial year 2005-06, Ministry of Urban Development sanctioned 23 projects costing Rs 864.83 for eight cities -- Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Bhopal, Indore and Nagpur and released Rs 90.11 crore as first installment from Centre's total share of Rs 367.36 crore under sub-mission on urban infrastructure and governance.

Thrust of sub-mission on urban infrastructure and governance under JNNURM launched on December 3, 2005 was to comprehensively address basic services -- water supply, sewerage, solid waste management, storm water drainage, comprehensive urban transport and urban renewal in select cities.
