UK says it kills senior al Qaeda figure in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Sep 25 (Reuters) British troops in Iraq's second largest city Basra said today they had killed a man whom Washington has described as a senior al Qaeda figure who escaped from a US prison in Afghanistan in 2005.

British military spokesman Major Charlie Burbridge said Omar Faruq was shot dead while resisting arrest during a pre-dawn raid by about 200 British troops in the city.
