Sensex drops 63 pts on selling in F

Mumbai, Sep 25 (UNI) The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) after staying sluggish for almost the whole day, finally closed 63 points below the previous figure, at 12,173.91, as selling pressure increased in the Futures and Options segment in the last half an hour of trade.

Volatility prevailed throughout the day, keeping the sensex range bound. It witnessed a swing of 128 points, touching a high of 12,273 and a low of 12,145 points during the day.

Earlier sensex opened 21 points in the green at 12,257 compared to the previous close of 12,236, on consistent buying in the midcap and the smallcaps indices.

Meanwhile, the crude oil price dipped to a six month low of US Dollar 59.85 per barrel mark, edeging the scrips of Oil and Metals sector by 0.24 and 0.26 per cent respectively. However, the FMCG sector followed by heavy selling in the F&O segment led the sensex to fall later in the day. FMCG was down by 1.36 per cent and IT was down by 1.02 per cent.

The breadth in the broader market too turned negative in favour of 1510 declines against 998 advances out of 2584 scrips that traded the BSE counters, however, 76 scrips remained unchanged.

BSE today clocked a turnover of Rs 3,501 crore.

Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were, Tata Steel up by 2.21 per cent to Rs 507.70, Tata Motors up by 1.31 per cent to Rs 846.40, Bharti Airtel up by 1.02 per cent to Rs 474.05, Hero Honda up by 0.82 per cent to Rs 772.25, ICICI up by 0.78 per cent to Rs 660.15, Reliance Industries up by 0.73 per cent to Rs 1,163.65 and BHEL was up by 0.58 per cent to Rs 2,325.70.

Besides the losers were Grasim Industries down by 1.97 per cent to Rs 2,469.20, NTPC down by 1.82 per cent to Rs 126.75, ITC down by 1.81 per cent to Rs 184.30, Bajaj Auto down by 1.79 per cent to Rs 2,866 and HLL down by 1.75 per cent to Rs 252.75.
