SC appoints three-member Local Commission

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court today appointed a three- member Local Commission to identify the boundaries of three north-eastern states -- Asom, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland -- and asked it to submit its report within a year.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justice C K Thakker and Justice R V Raveendran refused to permit the Nagaland government to raise objections to the appointment of the Local Commissioner in terms of the order dated September 13, 2004.

The court directed that all the three state governments to fully cooperate with the commission.

''We may, however, clarify that this Local Commissioner is not a boundary commission and all factual and legal objections are kept open for the parties to urge and raise after the report of the commission is submitted,'' the court added.

The court also directed that all the expenses would be borne by the Centre.
