PSEB beat Canara Bank in tie-breaker
Chandigarh, Sep 25 (UNI) Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) today ousted Canara Bank of Bangalore by an aggregate 5-3 margin following a tie-breaker in the preliminary round match of the 36th S N Vohra's Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sector 42 Stadium here.
The teams were evenly matched and they shared four goals in the stipulated 70-minute session.
In the tie-breaker session, PSEB converted their penalties through Nitan Sabarwal, Harjinder Singh and Varinder Singh while Jatinder pushed his stroke wide.
For Canara Bank, only Ronal Kiran succeeded in converting his stroke, while S P Shanmugham, KP Dinesh and Verghese John wasted their chances.
PSEB had shot into the lead in the 33rd minute when Jagjit's shot went in via a defender's stick.
Canara Bank bounced back into the game and forced their second penalty corner in the 44th minute. K P Dinesh took the penalty corner shot and Nilesh deflected the ball into the PSEB goal.
Maintaining their pressure, Canara Bank forged ahead in the 49th minuteand Ronal Kiran shot straight with a powerful shot which brooked no denial from the PSEB defenders.
PSEB then went all out and restored parity in the 50th minute with Jatinder Singh scoring a field goal. As the teams were tied two-all in the stipulated period, the organisers ordered the tie-breaker rule to resolve the dispute.
In another match after sharing two goals in the regulation period, Ropar Hawks managed to beat pluck Centre of Excellence of Patiala by 4-3.
The highlight of the match was a fine hat-trick by Sukhjinder Singh who struck in the 32nd, 52nd and 54th minutes. Varindera Kumar rounded of the winners' tally with a field goal in the 64th minute.
CEO scored through Kamaljit (29th), Amritveer (48th, penalty corner) and Sandeep (66th minute).
