Oppn leader appeals to Maharashtra DCM to skip MES programme

Belgaum, Sep 25 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council H K Patil today appealed to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil not to participate in the parallel convention, convened by the Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti (MES) to counter the special session of the state Legislature here.

Addressing newspersons here, he said it would be ''unbecoming'' of a person holding a constitutional post like Mr R R Patil, also the Home Minister, to take part in the MES convention, identifying with those opposing the historic session.'' Condemning the attitude of the MES leaders, he said 'it is not correct to sing a different tune in this hour of joy and celebration.'' Mr H K Patil said the Congress in the State had always favoured the implementation of the Mahajan Commission recommendations on the border dispute with Maharashtra and had welcomed the decision of the Karnataka Government to hold the session in Belgaum, expected to give a fillip to the developmental works in Northern Karnataka.

He clarified that no Congressman in the State had opposed the special session in Belgaum and pointed out that the initiative was in fact taken by the previous Congress Government by constituting a committee to recommend holding such a session.

Terming it as a step in the right direction, he urged the State Government to take all measures to build permanent infrastructure here to make it a regular event.
