Bail plea of 'kar sewak' denied

Chandigarh, Sep 25 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today declined the plea of Baba Amrik Singh of Dera Baba Jagtar Singh Kar Sevawale, Tarn Taran for anticipatory bail in the case of an alleged embezzlement of donations worth crores of rupees received in the name of servicing some of the historic Gurdwaras including those in Pakistan.

Baba Amrik Singh and some of his associates involved in the alleged crime, are absconding since their accusitions had come to the light.

While denying the anticipatory bail, Justice Ajai Lamba observed the donations were for a sacred cause of renovating, servicing Gurdwaras through collective self-help by people. However, it was also clear from the documents that the accused had purchased lands in his name using donation money. He further observed that custodial interrogation in such a cases important to bring the truth out and to know the modus operandi of the accused.

The counsel for the petitioner contended it was a common practice to purchase land in the name of Dera head and that the petitioner had not committed any crime. The accused was also involved in gold plating work at the Golden Temple and some Gurdwaras in Pakistan.
