SAIL to approve Rs 37,000 crore project for modernisation

Bokaro, Sep 24 (UNI) The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) would soon approve a project at a cost of Rs 37,000 crore to modernise its steel production units throughout the country.

Earlier SAIL had approved Rs 18,500 crore for the project which was in its last phase.

Communication Head of Bokaro Steel, a SAIL unit, Basant Kumar Thakur, quoting Chairman S K Rungta, here said SAIL was not aimed at increasing production through modernisation and addressing issues like energy preservation, pollution control and infrastructure would also be dealt through these units.

He said the chairman would ensure improvement in production, quality maintenance through better use of skilled and experienced human resources.

Mr Thakur said in order to maintain international standards of production the major steps would be taken which included modernisation of IISCO production unit, introduction of steel melting and extra-cold rolling facility at Sail production unit and bar and rod mill would be established in Durgapur unit.

Sail, in a joint effort, would set up a cement production unit and it was in the last phase.

He said to ensure continuous supply and achieve production target of iron ore sell has decided to form linkage with new iron ore mines in Chattisgarh and Jharkhand.

He said the Centre has reserved a store in Lau Ghat Mine for the long term iron ore demands of Bhilai production unit and efforts were being done to obtain legal permission.
