Imam recites from Koran to herald Durga Puja

Guwahati, Sep 24 (UNI) An Immam recited from Koran to herald the Durga Puja celebration in Shillong showing a fantastic blend of religious harmony and tolerance.

''The essentials of the Veda and the Koran are the same. It describes victory over evil'' Maulana Bilal Ahmed said after reciting it at pre-Puja get together for Harmony organized by the Central Puja committee at the Nepali Puja Committee at lower Jail Road in Shillong.

''Let this Puja be meaningful for the people of Shillong, the country and the world, which is being torn apart by intolerance, and ignorance. Let victory prevail over evil and let there be light where there is darkness'' said Rev P B Lyngodh, the Vicar of the Shillong Arch Diocese.

The pre-Puja get together is a unique tradition in Shillong which id attended by representatives of all the Dorbar Shnongs (Grassroots administrative organisations) besides different sections of the society.
