Tax revenue shoots up in MP

Bhopal, Sep 23 (UNI) Revenue from different taxes has shot up by 25 to 53 per cent during this fiscal in comparison to the corresponding period last year in Madhya Pradesh.

The increase assumes importance due to the fact that about 150 items were exempted from VAT introduced last April and tax on several other goods was reduced from 12.5 to 4 per cent, an official release said here today.

Commercial Tax Minister Babulal Gaur gave credit to the efficiency of officials who checked evasion as well as traders who honestly paid taxes. Simplification of the taxation system was also a major reason.

''By August 2006, revenue of Rs 1,611.85 crore was received from VAT and non-VAT items. This is Rs 348.85 crore more than the revenue received during the corresponding period in 2005-06. Revenue of Rs 2,124.74 crore was received from VAT, Commercial Tax, Salex Tax, Entry Tax and Hotel Tax by August while last year's corresponding figure was Rs 1,703.74 crore,'' Mr Gaur said.

Similarly, excise revenue increased by Rs 76.67 crore. Revenue from Entertainment Tax displayed an increase of 53 per cent, the release added.
