Single ownership will destroy UNI ind character
Chandigarh, Sept 23: Eminent columnist Kuldip Nayyar today expressed displeasure over the reported bid of a media house to take over majority stakes in the United News of India, saying single ownership would destroy the independent character of the news agency.
''If such a move is allowed to take place, it would affect the independent character of UNI which was founded by a group of newspapers with no one having majority stake in it,'' said Mr Nayyar who was one of the pioneer editors of the national news agency.
Moving over to single ownership, Mr Nayyar, who was the second General Manager of UNI said, would not be fair to UNI, its employees and its functioning.
The UNI, he said, was established with the united effort of the media people to ''break the monopoly'' of the other news agency and give it a competition.
Single ownership would destroy the independent character and objective approach of the news agency, Mr Nayyar said.
