Press should be accountable: Justice Reddy
Guwahati, Sep 23 (UNI) Gauhati High Court Chief Justice B Sudershan Reddy today said that the press should be responsible and accountable to the civil society while exercising their freedom of speech.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of 'The Assam Tribune' here today, Justice Reddy further said the media should not overlook justice while exercising their duties.
''All possible care must be taken in exercising the freedom of speech and the media should not overlook their responsibilities at any time'' he said.
''Freedom of press does not mean the right to do anything and everything. Responsibilities and duties also accompaned the rights. The existence of a free Press depends only on the existence of a civil society,'' he said adding that the media should ensure that justice plays a vital role in mobilising public opinion.
He also said that ''reasonable criticism is justified for public interest'' but one should always avoid unfair criticism and ensure that freedom of the press is not misused.
General Secretary of the Delhi Journalist Union M L Talwar stressed on the need of changing the work culture of the trade unions.
Vice-President of the All India Newspaper Employees Federation Mr Santosh Kumar was also present in the ocassion.
