Find mechanisms to clear pending cases fast: Governor

Kochi, Sep 23 (UNI) Kerala Governor R L Bhatia today stressed the need to find mechanisms to clear the backlog of cases piling up in courts all over the country.

Inaugurating a lecture series here on ''Challenges Before the Legal Profession'', to mark the concluding of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Kerala High Court, Mr Bhatia said law was an important instrument of social change.

The people, through their elected representatives in Parliament and the State Assemblies, give voice to their aspirations. But laws were an important instrument for the people to achieve the goals enshrined in the Constitution for their socio-economic development, he said.

The hopes given to the people through the Constitution should not remain a distant dream, he added.

Senior Supreme Court Advocate K K Venugopal, who delivered the inaugural lecture in the series, also stressed the need to find mechanisms to clear the pending cases in the courts.

Stating that ''justice delayed is justice denied'', Mr Venugopal said the delivery of speedy legal redress to the common man was a major challenge before the legal profession, which needed the joint co-operation of all wings of the judiciary.

Kerala Chief Justice V K Bali and Advocate General C P Sudhakar Prasad were also present on the occasion.
