'Centre to intervene on K'taka-Goa water diversion'

Panaji, Sep 23: The Goa Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has denounced Karnataka's decision to divert the Mhadei River water to its Khalsa- Bhandura Project.

Goa state Concil (CPI) secretary Mr Christhoper Fonseca in a press release issued here today described the yesterday's act of the Karantaka Government to lay the foundation stone of Khalsa-Bhandura Project as ''brazen, provocative, unwise, violating both the letter and spirit of our federal constitution and polity'' aimed at suverting the interest of Goa and its people.

The CPI is of the firm view that the Union Government should immediately intervene and bring the two State governments on the ''negotiating table''. The Centre should also esnure that the Karnataka government should halt the work on Khalsa-Bhandura Project until the issue of water- sharing is amicably resolved CPI also opines that Goa and the neighbouring states should work out a permanent, durable and abiding water sharing agreement to avoid future conflicts.
