739 'kalasams' missing, temple official suspended

Rameswaram, Sep 23 (UNI) More than 739 copper 'kalasams' were reported missing from the ancient Ramanatha Swamy temple here today while one of the temple officials was placed under suspension in this connection.

Temple Executive Officer Mahadevan said, 739 of the 1008 'kalasams' were reported missing from the temple and Mr Narayana Iyer (39) who was incharge of these, was placed under suspension on charges of theft.

The missing 'kalasams' were taken out from the temple over a period of time. The value of the missing 'kalasams' was estimated at Rs 25,000.

The theft of the 'kalasams', each weighing around 200 gms, came to light when a pilgrim from north India wanted to perform 1008 'Kalasa Pooja' and had paid Rs 5000 in this regard.

As the officials found only 269 'kalasams', they suggested they could be used for the pooja. However, the devotee insisted that the pooja should be performed in all the 1008 'kalasams'.

He lodged a complaint with the temple authorities.

On interrogation, Mr Iyer gave conflicting reports leading to his suspension.
