Suzlon project: Compensation, job demand from displaced families

Udupi, Sep 22 (UNI) Residents of Nandikur in this district, who stand to lose their land to the proposed Rs 1,000 crore Suzlon windmill manufacturing company, today demanded that the Karnataka Government and the company pay them adequate compensation, besides offering employment opportunites to youths from the displaced families.

Local leaders representing the land losers argued that the compensation calculated on the basis of the notification issued in 1998 was inadequate and the Government should issue a new notification.

Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, who convened the meeting, said there was no provision to cancel the old notification and issue a new one.

Medical Education and district incharge Minister Dr V S Acharya invited a five-member delegation to Bangalore to hold discussions with the Law Secretary to change the old notification.

Mr M Aleem, representing the company, said all applications would be received through the local employment exchange. Initially, it proposed to recruit 1,500 ITI and diploma holders.
