SC restrains govt from allowing new GM crops
New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed the government not to permit any fresh field trials for Genetically Modified (GM) crops till further orders.
The order was passed by a bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal on a petition by Aruna Rodrigues who alleged that such crops could cause a irreversible ecological damage.
Posting the matter for further hearing on October 13, the court said Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) should withhold all pending applications in this regard till further directions.
The court further asked the government to consider including individual experts in GEAC.
