RI for customs inspector in disproportionate assets case
Chennai, Sep 22 (UNI) The Special Judge for CBI cases, Madurai, today convicted and sentenced A Angamuthu, Inspector of Customs and Central Excise, Tiruchirapalli to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 65,000 in connection with a disproportionate assets case.
The CBI's case was that Angamuthu possessed assets to the tune of Rs 6.68 lakh, which was disproportionate to his known sources of income and his family members. His brother A Balakrishnan was charged with falsifying and manipulating the accounts to show that the cash seized during a search was an accounted amount.
Passing orders in the case, the special judge, while awarding three years RI for Angamuthu, slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Balakrishnan, an official release here said.
The anti-corruption branch of the CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case on October 20, 1990 before the court of special judge for CBI cases, Madurai. The case was taken on file in 1996 and the special judge pronounced the judgement today, the release added.
