40 per cent decline in existence of species: WWF

Jalandhar, Sep 22 (UNI) Environmental activist and WWF-India Secretary General Ravi Singh today said the population of various species has recorded a decline of 40 per cent globally during past 35 years.

Speaking at a Nature Conservation Festival function organised by Vajra Army Wives Welfare Association(AWWA) in Jalanhdar Cantt here, Mr Singh said this concerning trend was pointed out in Living Planet Report Study done by scientists during the period of 1971 to 2005.

Expressing concern over ecological changes, environmental imbalance and over exploitation of natural resources, Mr Singh said the study also indicated that consumption level had registered over two fold increase since 1961.

Stressing up on the need of conservation of natural resources, he said people's behaviour should be changed and every one should respond to the need of environment conservation.

Mr Singh said the country should immediately ensure better water management and launching of campaign for increasing tree cover through massive forestation.

Every citizen should adopt at least one tree, he added.
