Sudden rains cool down Jaipur

Jaipur, Sep 21 (UNI) Residents of the state capital heaved a sigh of relief from the extreme heat conditions as heavy rains lashed the city today after a long gap.

A raging storm before the heavy downpour in the evening had the people scurrying for cover. Trees were uprooted and a number of hoardings at several places came crashing down, blocking roads in the storm.

Then the heavy showers, which lashed the city for more than 30 minutes, cooled down the city considerably, bringing respite for the people, who have been suffering the seething heat for the past several days. The temperatures have been hovering between 37 to 39 degree Celsius over the past few days.

S S Singh, director, meteorological department, Jaipur, told UNI the low pressure area developed over the Bay of Bengal, West Bengal and Orissa, is moving north-westwards and is the reason behind the sudden downpour today.

He said the rains will persist for two-three days more and will lower the night temperatures but will not make any significant changes in the day temperatures. So the afternoons are likely to remain hot and humid, adding that these can be considered as monsoon showers only.

The weather office has predicted rains in some places in east Rajasthan.
