ONGC, PCA Colts record victories

Chandigarh, Sep 21 (UNI) ONGC today routed Canara Bank by 123 runs and obtained five points, while PCA Colts beat Air India by seven runs in the 13th J P Atray Cricket Tournament here.

The match was truncated to 45 overs each because of a delayed start on account of excessive moisture on the wicket.

Canara Bank won the toss and put ONGC into bat to take advantage of the helpful morning conditions. They opened with Test star Gautam Gambhir and Sandeep Sharma. However Canara Bank fast bowler Mansoor Ali Khan sent Gautam Gambhir's off stump cart wheeling with the score zero for one.

The heavy morning conditions made batting difficult and by the stroke of 100 ONGC lost of half their side.

Man of the match Manoj Mudgil (51)and Amit Sharma (47) took the fifth wicket stand to 70 runs when Amit Sharma was trapped in front of the wicket by medium pacer Mansoor Ali Khan.

The ONGC innings terminated at 212 for 9 in 45 overs in 203 minutes.

For Canara Bank, Mansoor Ali Khan (3 for 33) and R. Bahatkal (4 for 35) were the pick of the bowlers.

Canara Bank were 3 down for 15 and the regular procession of batsmen carried on from there. They were finally bundled out for 89 runs in 23 overs in 124 minutes. Only one drop batsman K B Pawan (40) of 49 and G.K. Anil Kumar (10) reached the double figure.

ONGC medium pacer Sumit Narwal (4 for 34) and Kunal Lal (3 for 15) accounted for the top order while former test off spinner Sarandeep Singh (2 for 11) polished off the tail.

In the second match, at DAV School Sector 8, PCA Colts scraped past Air India by 7 runs. PCA Colts with this win got 4 points while Air India got 1. Air India has now got 5 points from two matches and PCA Colts has got 4 point from one game and also MP has got 1 point from one match. PCA Colts won the toss and elected to bat. But none of their batsman could convert the good start into a big innings. Ishan Dogra 26 of 32, Gurkirat 46 of 84, Ankur Kakkar 36 of 43, Hardevinder 26 of 31, all started well but could not consolidate their innings, resulting in a modest total of 200 for 9 of 50 overs in 150 minutes.

For Air India, Sidharth Trivedi was the most successful bowler.

Starting the run chase, PCA Colts met with an immediate success when test start Robin Uthappa was caught by Ishan Dogra at point of the bowling of left arm seamers Amit Uniyal for a solitary four.

The other opener Sushant Marathe 35 of 56 balls inclusive of 6 fours held the fort for a while but wickets kept falling at regular intervals with Air India at one stage tottering at 100 for 7.

Then came a 92 run eighth wicket stand between South Paw Ankit Chavan 57 of 71 balls inclusive of 9 fours and Mandhar Dhalvi 32 of 56 balls. At 192 for 7 Air India were sniffing victory which was just 8 runs away and in a span of one run every thing was over with Air India folding for 193 in 47.5 overs in 220 minutes.

Amanpreet Singh 3 for 29, Karan Goyal 2 for 26 and Amit Uniyal 2 for 31 were the most successful bowlers for PCA Colts.

At DAV College Sector 10, Chandigarh, LIC recorded a 3 wicket win over World Cricket Academy (WCA)-Mumbai. WCA skipper former test star Rajesh Chauhan after wining the toss elected to bat.

Their opener Amit Singh 46 of 82 balls with 6 fours and Vijay Singh 43 of 66 balls with 3 fours and 1 six were involved in a second wicket stand of 45 runs.

Their innings was further propped up by some lusty hitting by tail ender Sandeep Singh who scored 32 runs of 23 balls with the help of 2 fours and 3 soaring 6 before he was stumped by wicketkeeper Negi of Parveen Thapa. WCA innings ended at 212 for 9 of 50 over in 211 minutes. Left arm spinner Parveen Thapar with the impressive figure 10-1-26-5 was the pick of LIC bowlers.

Chasing the modest total, LIC Chandigarh who had lost their last encounter against Rajasthan by 5 wickets made a cautious start.

Their innings was propped up by 3rd wicket stand of 98 runs between Gaurav Goyal 50 in 86 balls with 8 fours and Bhageshwar Bisht 49 of 100 balls with 6 fours.

The LIC scored 216 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 47.5 overs.

With this win, the points tally of LIC after two matches went upto 3.
