Desecration of Ambedkar's statue: One arrested

Gulbarga, Sep 21 (UNI) Police today arrested a youth on the charge of vandalising a statue of Bharat Ratna awardee B R Ambedkar in Jewargi, about 30 km from here yesterday.

Superintendent of Police incharge B V Kittali said police arrested Parasuram Doddamani (22) in connection with defiling the statue. The accused, involved in an extortion case earlier, was also a Dalit and had committed the act to create trouble between the two Dalit groups in the town.

The incident had led to tension in Jewargi town as Dalit outfits had resorted to rasta roko at various places in the district for over four hours yesterday, demanding the arrest of the culprit.

Doddamani was later remanded to judicial custody.
