Delhi demolitions: BJP demands CM's resignation

New Delhi, Sept 21: Charging the Delhi Government with failing to protect the interests of people of the capital by saving their properties from demolition and convince courts about mixed land use, the BJP today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The party also called on the Centre to convene a special session of Parliament for approving an amended Master Plan for Delhi, giving amnesty to the lakhs of people and traders.

Noting that four people had lost their lives in yesterday's bandh and demonstration against the demolition drive and sealing operations, Delhi BJP unit chief Dr Harshvardhan told mediapersons that the state government had not presented any concrete plan before the Court to provide sufficient relief to the people.

''The Chief Minister, on her part, is trying to project as if all the demolitions were taking place were at the behest of the Court and she was helpless. The drive is to instil 'Mall culture' in Delhi and if the courts are to govern Delhi, then there is no need for a government .... hence Mrs Sheila Dikshit should resign immeditely'', he demanded.

He said when the BJP was in power in Delhi, the MCD had even approved the recommendtions of Vijay Kumar Malhotra Committee report but the Congress government rejected this, thus binding the hands of the Central government. ''The result is that the people have to face the wrath of the Courts,'' he said.

Urging the UPA government to call a special session of Parliament for approving the amnesty plan and spare the people from the problems of demolition and sealing operations, Dr Harsh Vardhan said that the government which could not provide houses and shops to the people have no right to take away the fundamental rights of citizens.
