Chennai, Sep 21 (UNI) The city-based Alpha Arts and Science college has brought laurels to the country as its SIFE Team won the third place in the SIFE World Cup held in Paris on September 13.

''This is the highest honour ever won by an Indian Team in the SIFE World Cup, since its inception in 1975,'' Ms Grace George, Chairperson, Alpha Group of Educational Institutions said while talking to newspersons here.

A five-member team led by Ms Arunthati Ramanathan, a third year Bio-Chemistry student, had bagged the prestigious award after facing stiff competition from as many as 46 countries around the world.

Besides Ms Ramanathan, Ms R S Sindu, Mr D Deepak, Mr V B RAjakumar and Mr P Krishna Chaitanya and Faculty Advisor Josephine Jayasanthi were part of the Alpha Arts and Science College SIFE Team which represented India.

Projects on entrepreneurship were presented by the teams from the 46 countries for the honours and the Alpha Team had presented their projects on Empowerment of Palmyra juice tappers, Sericulture as an alternate occupation for farmers and marketing of Nutriva, a herbal product made of Aloe Vera.

A 49-member panel of judges from the international corporate world, including those from KPMG, Coco-Cola, Tata Motors and Schwann Food Company, shortlisted four teams for the finals and awarded the third place to the Alpha Team, Ms Ramanathan said.

''We spent nearly a year and had interacted with more than 1,000 individuals to prepare the projects,'' she said adding they qualified for the World Cup after winning the National Championship in the annual SIFE National Competition.

''We propose to submit the projects to the Centre and state governments, for follow up actions,'' she said.

''Its indeed an achievement by our students. It gives great pleasure to see our students have used their educational skills and values taught in our college to bring a positive impact on the society,'' Ms George said.

Ms Suja George, Managing Director, Alpha Group said SIFE (Students in Free Enterprises) was a global non-profit organisation, active on university campuses in more than 40 countries.

SIFE in India was established in 2003 and was expanding ever since, she added.
