Verghese assures cooperation to modernise RPF

Chennai, Sep 20 (UNI) Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese today assured Full cooperation to modernise the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

Addressing the RPF Raising Day celebrations here, he said in the present security scenario, modernisation of the force was essential and assured his cooperation to the organisation in this regard.

Mr Varghese said the RPF, after the amendment of RPF and Railways Act, had undergone significant changes in its profile.

The force has transformed its image from an organisation primarily protecting and safeguarding the railway property to a multi-faceted security agency with responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of travelling public, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Security Commissioner, RPF G M P Reddy said the force in Southern Railway was providing escorts to 247 trains and about 25 per cent of the force was utilised for this purpose.

Earlier, the celebrations began with a colourful parade. Mr Varghese reviewed the parade and took the salute. The parade wsa followed by ''Maal Khamba'' drill and ''Dare Devil Act'' by the specially trained RPF staff.

On the occasion, seven RPF staff were awarded the Director General's Insignia and Commendation for their meritorious service.
