LDF wrests Kangazha division

Kottayam, Sep 20 (UNI) With the wresting of Kangazha division today, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerged victorious in the Kottayam District Panchayat.

In the byelection to the division, S Prabhakara Kurup (CPI-Ind-LDF) trounced Kerala Congress-M (UDF) candidate V Radhika Menon by a margin of over 1,500 votes.

Winning in the bypoll was crucial for the UDF as well as the LDF as they had ten members each in the Panchayat.

Besides the LDF and UDF candidates G Gopinatha Kurup of the DIC(K) and an Independent were in the fray.

The byelection to the Kangazha division was necessitated following the election of Prof N Jayaraj as an MLA.
