Kolkata Metro service disrupted following suicide attempt

Kolkata, Sep 20 (UNI) A suicide attempt by a youth and a minor technical snag disrupted Metro rail serives in the city twice today causing inconvenience to the commuters.

In the first incident, underground train services went out of gear for nearly 45 minutes during the rush morning office hours when a 35 -year-old disgruntled youth jumped before the railway tracks at Belgachia station at around 0943 hours.

But as the driver of the Dum-bound train applied emergency brakes on time, the youth escaped almost unhurt receiving minor injury on his arms and forehead. Soon the Metro railway personnel swung into action and rescued the victim from undercarriages of the train and admitted him to nearby R.G.Kar hospital.

As a result, train services on both UP and Down sections were disrupted for nearly 45 minutes during which three trains were cancelled causing severe inconvenience to daily commuters, particularly the office goers.

The woes of Metro rail commuters aggravated further in the afternoon when a Tollygunge-bound rake developed technical snag at Syambazar station at around 14-20 hours and could not move further.

As a result four trains from Dum Dum were detained at different stations disrupting the service for more than 40 minutes.

Train services were, however, normalised after the defective train was brought back to Dum Dum station for emergency repair, Metro rail sources here informed.
