Koirala rules out Thai like coup in Nepal
Kathmandu, Sep 20: Calling the coup in Thailand as unfortunate Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today ruled out the possibility of any such military coup in the Himalayan country.
''This is unfortunate,'' Mr Koirala told mediapersons at his residence today. Asked about the possibility of such coup in Nepal, he said, ''There is no such possibility of such action in Nepal.'' ''There is no comparison between the monarchy in Thailand and that in Nepal,' Nepalese daily Kantipur quoted Koirala as saying.
The Thai military had launched a coup against Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was in New York to attend UN general assembly last night.
''There is no such possibility of any coup like that took place in Thailand in Nepal at a time when all the executive, legislative and constitutional powers of the King have been stripped off'' he said.
He said the political parties in Nepal are responsible and the sovereignty of the country is vested on the countrymen, hence, Nepal's political scenario should not be compared with the latest political developments in Thailand.
Meanwhile, CPN-UML General Secretary Madavh Kumar Nepal has said that the army takeover in Thailand has definitely induced serious concern into pro-democratic forces in Nepal, media reports here said.
''Thai coup might have encouraged regressive forces in Nepal but the democratic forces must remain alert'' Kantipur quoted Mr Nepal as saying.
