HNLC ultra shot dead, two others arrested

Shillong, Sept 20 (UNI) A hardcore member of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) was shot dead and two others were arrested by the Meghalaya police today.

Meghalaya Police with the back-up of support of Special Operation team raided an HNLC hideout at Meghalaya's Umkrem village bordering the international Indo-Bangla border.

The armed militants resorted to heavy firing on raiding party.

In the ensuing encounter, one HNLC militant Bankit Khonjee was killed, while Wanpynshangian Dympep alias Banjop and a surrendered HNLC ultra Westmorland Lamin were arrested, East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police A.R.Mawthoh said.

Mr Mawthoh said police also seized one modified sten-gun of 9 mm caliber, one 9 mm carbine, 40 rounds of 9 mm live ammunition and eight cases of assorted ammunition from the militants' possession.

He said the raid was conducted based on information that the HNLC ultras were engaged in extortion in the border areas.

Mr Mawthoh said the surrendered ultra was arrested for harbouring the HNLC militants.
