Grain discolouration in late sown paddy crop in Punjab

Ludhiana, Sep 20 (UNI) Excessive application of water and fertilizers has caused sheath rot and grain discolouration in paddy across Punjab from Gurdaspur to Moga district.

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Plant Pathology department head Dr Satvinder Kaur Mann today attributed the sheath rot to certain pathogens and grain discolouration to the earlier rains.

This wide spread problem that might effect the yield is particularly in the late sown paddy.

The late crop, sown after June 15 can be protected through limited chemical spraying.

Dr Mann said though this is a disturbing trend but there is no need to panic and recommended sprays to protect the crop.

Director of Extension Education Dr S S Gill has flashed a message to PAU pathologist to issue remedial steps.
