New Delhi, Sep 20 (UNI) The Congress today accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of seeking to divide the society by getting a law passed attacking the secular character of the Constitution with an eye on the elections.

Stating that the matter needed to looked into in a larger perspective, Congress Spokesman Satyavrat Chaturvedi said this was a part of the larger game of the RSS which had conspired to finish off religions of Indian origin.

He recalled the RSS Sarsangh Chalak had made a similar comment on the Sikh Panth in Punjab which had evoked sharp reactions.

Mr Chaturvedi said the BJP had atacked the fundamental rights that guaranteed freedom to profess any religion, termed Jain and Buddhist religion as offshoots of Hindu religion thereby seeking to finish off their existence, he alleged.

The Congress had oppsed the state government's move in the Vidhan Sabha and would take up the matter by going to the people, Mr Chaturvedi added.
