CMs' Conclave on Sep 23,24 in Nainital

New Delhi, Sep 20: The Seventh Conclave of the Chief Ministers of the Congress-ruled States to be held on September 23 and 24 in Nainital in Uttaranchal will focus on agriculture and the problems of farmers, besides reviewing the internal security situation in the various States.

The Conclave, to be inaugurated by Congress President Sonia Gandhi at 1100 hrs on September 23, will deliberate on evolving a policy to achieve higher growth rate in agriculture, Congress Spokesman Satyavrat Chaturvedi said here today.

He told reporters that the Congress was very concerned over the increasing cases of suicides by farmers which had not ceased even after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh having announced relief packages for them.

Mr Chaturvedi said the party wanted that agriculture should register at least 4 per cent rate of growth similar to the progress achieved in the services and the manufacturing sector to enable a overall growth rate of 10 per cent.

Replying to a question, Mr Chaturvedi said the existing agriculture policy was found to be deficient at times. He said though the Ministry of Agriculture was doing well, there was scope for improvement.

The Conclave will be attended by Dr Singh besides the Chief Ministers of the 14 Congress-ruled States and AICC General Secretaries incharge of the States.
