TMT gears up to deliver goods

Thane, Sep 19 (UNI) Following the example of Brihanmumbai Electricity and State Transport (BEST) in Mumbai, the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) civic transport services is slated to deliver goods.

Addressing a news conference here today after routing out the Saffron Shiv Sena from the TMT, Thane Municipal Transport Employees Union, the new leader Sharad Rao told newsmen that his union would deliver goods and bring in 98 percent efficiency in the civic transport services in the city and live upto the expectations of the citizens of the clean city.

Since its inception, in 1989 (by the late Shiv Sena district chief Anand Dighe) the TMT Employees Union was in the hands of the Shiv Sena. Off late, the staff of the TMT was fed up on account of the internal squabbles among the Sena leaders and they getting secondary treatment.

Taking advantage of the disgruntled employees, Sharad Rao leaped into the election fray and totally wiped out the Sena from the scene. Rao also said that his union was totally opposed to even the partial privatization of the civic transport services and added that the workmen will do anything to provide best of services.

He pointed out that the state government is to help the BMC to procure 650 new buses in the same manner he would approach the state government to help the TMC to purchase new buses. As the first step, buses which are rotting in the depots would be serviced, repaired and put into services in the city to meet the growing demands.

He assured the workers that all their demands would be met in a phased manner and now that they have elected his men they should have patience to get the benefits.

He also said that on 'May Day', May 01, a special scheme worth Rs. 51 lakh would be announced for the TMT employees, which will be funded from the balance available with the union and the contribution from the parent union.

He also paid rich tributes to the memory of Anand Dighe who had founded the union and declared that the newly-elected body would work towards meeting the goals set up by Dighe which would mean a befitting tribute to his memory.
