Serial killer nabbed by Chhattisgarh Police
Raipur, Sep 19 (UNI) The Chhattisgarh Police has arrested a 35-year-old man claiming responsibility for murdering four women here last week.
DGP Om Prakash Rathor told reporters here this evening that the accused was tracked down after naked bodies were recovered from different locations.
''Uchho Banmal was arrested from his village in neighbouring Orissa's Kalahandi district. He confessed during sustained interrogation,'' the top officer added.
After slaying the women between September 12 and 15, the accused made unsuccessful attempts to kill three other women by taking them to an isolated place. However, they escaped and alerted the police who prepared a sketch on the basis of description, leading to identification and arrest.
Praising his officers and men for the timely arrest of the ''serial killer,'' the DGP said Banmal could have created havoc. The accused told the police that he had become impotent and hence stripped the victims before strangling them.
IG (Raipur Range) Durgesh Madhav Awasthy, who led the probe, said they were verifying whether the accused was also involved in similar cases earlier as he had stayed in Chhattisgarh five years back.
