Police opens fire to control mob in Rewa, 26 injured in violence

Rewa, MP, Sep 19 (UNI) At least 26 people, including seven police jawans, were injured in firing and stone throwing as violence erupted during a road blockade to protest the transfer of school principal in Rewa district yesterday.

Police had fired five rounds in air to control an agitated mob comprising students and their parents. Later, a miscreant opened fire from his countrymade gun injuring two persons, including a homeguard jawan.

In the ensuing clash, about two dozen people, including seven persons, were injured. Ten people were arrested in this connection.

Senior officers, including the Collector and the Superintendent of Police, reached the spot. The Additional Collector and the SP were camping in the area and the situation was under control.

Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) V K Pandey said higher secondary school principal Narendra Mishra was recently transferred.

About 300-400 students and their parents blocked National Highway 27 to protest the transfer.

As attempts to persuade the mob failed, police used mild force to disperse the crowd. Upon this, the protestors started pelting stones forcing police to open fire.

Later, a miscreant fired gunshots injuring homeguard jawan Nandlal Chaturvedi and one Jaiprakash Mishra. The jawan was sent to Allahabad for treatment, while Jaiprakash was admitted in hospital here.
