NCW team visits Uttar Pradesh's Bajera Khurd village

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) A team from National Commission for Women today visited Uttar Pradesh's Bajera Khurd village and carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the situation after complaints of police atrocities on protesting villagers on Sunday.

The villagers, who are opposed to a Reliance power project at Dadri, had filed complaints of alleged police atrocities during a demonstration.

The team led by NCW member Manju Snehlata Hembrom visited the site and spoke to the villagers.

''The Commission carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and also reviewed the response of the police on recommendations given by the NCW on a similar incident in the same area,'' NCW spokesperson said.

On Sunday, police fired in the air to disperse a group of villagers protesting against construction of the power project and 12 protestors, including two women, were taken into custody after lathicharge.

The NCW has already carried out an investigation into complaints by the residents of Bajera Khurd village about harassment by police and has in its interim report held up police as well as reliance industries prima facie guilty of human rights violations of the villagers.
