Indian student expelled for ragging

Dubai, Sep 19 (UNI) An Indian engineering student at BITS Pilani's Dubai offshore campus has been expelled for forcing new students to simulate sexual acts on one another.

The campus, located in the educational cluster of Knowledge Village here, decided to expel him after a seven-hour appeal hearing on ragging incidents.

One student was suspended for a year, while suspension orders on two others have been put on hold.

The parents of the expelled student had smashed a camera on Sunday, after demanding a meeting with the college's director, Dr M Ramachandran.

Four students, in the age group of 19-20 were identified as the leaders in the ragging incident, in which 17 first year students had complained that they were forced to perform 'unnatural acts' by the seniors.

The appeal hearing was moved from Sunday to yesterday after Ramachandran complained of attempts by parents of at least one student to intimidate him.
