GSU calls off non-coperation-movement

Shillong, Sep 19 (UNI) The Garo Students' Union has called off its nine-day non-cooperation movement in three districts of Garo Hills after Chief Minister J D Rymbai offered talks on their grievances.

The GSU had decided to launch fresh agitation from September 20 to 27 in protest against the state government's inabilities to remove Justice (retd) D N Baruah, who is probing into last year's September 30 police firing at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills district.

Five persons, including a woman, died and several were injured in the incident.

Talking to newsmen after a meeting with West Garo Hills district Deputy Commissioner Sampath Kumar, GSU President Andreas Sangma said that the student's body had decided to put-off its agitation to reciprocate Mr Rymbai's offer to resolve the issue across the table.

Earlier, the Chief Minister's Office had faxed a message to Mr Kumar to inform the GSU that Mr Rymbai was ready to meet the students' leaders on September 27 here.
