AITC retrieves status of Opoosition in W B Assembly

Kolkata, Sept 19 (UNI) The Trinamool Congress retained the Bongaon Assembly seat to retrieve the status of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly when its candidate Sougata Roy defeated Left Front nominee Pankaj Ghosh of the CPI(M) by 5761 votes in the byelection.

The byelection to the seat was held on September 16 after it fell vacant following the death of Trinamool MLA Bhupen Seth.

In the 294-member Assembly, the Trinamool fell one short of the required 30 seats to be recognised as an Opposition as Mr Seth died a few days after the Assembly election results were declared in May last.
